Coal miners in their ceremonial habits during a march in "defence of the good name” of the pope John Paul II in Kraków, Poland, on 02.04.2023, following allegations that the pope protected paedophile priests while archbishop of Krakow during the 1970s.
People who came from all over southern Poland, included coal miners in their ceremonial habits, extreme pro-lifers/anti-choice, Knights of John Paul II, Solidarity trade union leaders and members, rosary associations and people bused from towns and villages in the region. Also in attendence were local and state politicians, EU parlament members, and regional superintendend of education.
Although the canonized Polish pope has been dead since 2005, the recent allegations caused a collective meltdown in the ranks of the ruling nationalist Law and Justice party, which is closely allied with Polish Catholic Church. In addition to a parliamentary resolution “defending the good name” of the pope, the government and its affiliated media have launched a wide-ranging campaign about John Paul II. Public broadcaster TVP is now airing a daily papal sermon.
